Reasons

Students give many reasons why they choose to study for their degree or short courses through the University of London International Programmes. Of primary importance is the world-wide reputation of the University of London degree.
As the majority of students are in the twenty five to forty five age range, flexibility and affordability are also important. Students can plan to fit their studies around family and professional commitments.
For students outside the UK there is the advantage of normally not needing to come to London, as examinations are held world-wide at local examination centres.
Quality
The University of London is recognised nationally and internationally as a centre of academic excellence. The quality of its awards is assured through the assessment and examination process.
Examination standards
The quality of the degree or Certificate of achievement you receive as a successful external student is assured in the following way:
Your work is assessed to exactly the same standard as that for on-campus students studying at a College of the University. No concession in quality or academic rigour is given for the more difficult study circumstances of external students. You need to be reasonably confident that you have the ability to succeed in an examination before making your entry.
Colleges of the University and individual academic staff of the University are directly involved in the International Programmes. They develop the syllabuses, write study materials, set examination papers and mark scripts. As a result, high academic standards are maintained.
Each programme has a Lead College which takes responsibility for academic development and assessment.
Upon successful completion, you are awarded a University of London Degree, Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. The University makes no distinction in the quality of a degree gained by students attending in London and those achieved by external students studying in their home country. Statute 66(2) of the University of London states, ‘Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.’

Choice

The University of London offers a wide variety of qualifications to both on-campus students studying at one of the Colleges in London, and to external students studying through the International Programmes in one of over 180 countries around the world. Through the International Programmes you may study for either an Undergraduate or Postgraduate qualification (see: Undergraduate programmes [New Window] and/or Postgraduate programmes [New Window] for further information [These links will open new windows].  You may also study individual course modules from the selection of course units offered.

For the majority of qualifications you may choose how and where you study and within University Regulations, for how long. Undergraduate students normally have between three and eight years in which to complete their degree; postgraduate students normally have between two and five years. The Postgraduate Laws programme is slightly shorter. The flexible time allowed puts you in the driving seat. You may take examinations every year if you wish and, if you're successful, complete in the minimum time. However, if for any reason you do not feel adequately prepared for the rigours of examination you may defer your entry until the next exam sitting.

Affordability

Undergraduate Programmes
Fees vary slightly according to the qualification you study and your location. You are required to pay an application handling fee and then if accepted by the University, an initial registration fee and (annual) continuing registration fees together with examination entry fees, as appropriate.
Study guides are included in the registration fees but text books are costed separately and examination administration fees are also charged separately and are paid directly to examination centres.

Postgraduate Programmes

Fees for postgraduate programmes vary according to the particular degree or postgraduate diploma. They depend on the amount and type of material and study support provided by the University.
For most Postgraduate programmes you will be required to pay a registration fee and a fee for each course unit which includes the exam entry fee. The opportunity to pay-as-you-go helps you to spread out the cost of your studies. Examination administration fees are charged separately and are paid directly to examination centres.
Individual Courses
Individual course units are priced separately, depending on the programme from which they have been selected.

Academic input
The same academic staff who teach on-campus students at the varios colleges of the University of London, plan the degree syllabuses, set examination papers, mark scripts and develop study materials for external students. The examination questions are prepared in London and despatched to over 650 examination centres in may countries world wide. Once the scripts have been completed they are returned to London marked and moderated by academics of the University.
No concession in quality or academic rigor is made for the more difficult study circumstances of external students.
It is written into the Statutes of the University that 'Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.'
Studying as an external student of the International Programmes

  • Your work is assessed to exactly the same standard as that of a student who attends in London. The following is an extract from the Statutes of the University of London: Statute 66(2) states, ‘Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.’
  • Colleges of the University and individual academic staff of the University are directly involved in the International Programmes. They develop the syllabuses, write study materials, set examination papers and mark scripts. As a result, the highest academic standards are maintained.
  • Degrees all have a ‘Lead’ College which takes responsibility for academic development. The exception is the LLB and LLM qualifications where more than one College is involved.
  • The study materials you receive have been written specifically with independent study in mind.
  • You may work at your own pace and to your own schedule. You are free to choose the place and method of study best suited to your personal circumstances.
  • Your period of registration as an undergraduate student is flexible: minimum three years, maximum eight years; Diploma: minimum one year, maximum five years. Access Route: Economics, Management and the Social Sciences are minimum one year, maximum three years.
  • Your period of registration as a postgraduate student is flexible: normally minimum two years (one year for Postgraduate Laws), maximum five years;
  • There are generally no quotas for entry. If you meet the University’s entrance requirements, you may register as a  student of the International Programmes.
  • For most courses there is no requirement to attend classes in London.
  • Examinations may be taken at centres all over the world. In any one year, more than 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate candidates are examined in over 180 countries.
  • As an International Programmes student you will avoid the expense of travelling to and living in London. Generally you will pay lower fees than a student on a conventional course.
As a distance learner you will need to take responsibility for managing your own learning — organising resources, managing time, setting goals and deadlines and building your own understanding of the subject. In reality this is not very different from what is expected of a University student studying on-campus, apart from the fact that some resources are often more accessible to campus-based students.
Studying for a university degree involves more than learning the details of your subject. It involves a lot of reading, thinking about what you have read, and then developing your own thoughts and opinions. You are expected to think for yourself, and you will need to develop the confidence and skills to enable you to express your thoughts.
At the same time you must develop the skills necessary to satisfy the formalities of examinations. Some subjects are compulsory whilst others can be chosen from options — based on your interests and possibly on what you want to do in the future. You will also need to balance the demands of your studies with your personal life. It is not always an easy thing to do.
As an external student you may feel that you will not receive as much support as you would if you were a full-time student at a College campus. Much of the advice and information that tutors usually give to students face to face will however be contained in the distance learning study materials and in other information sent to you by the University. You will need to turn to these materials to sort out questions or problems, so you should make sure that you know what they contain.
Studying at a distance
Every institution offering programmes by distance learning is different, and has its own unique characteristics. It is important to understand the University's approach to distance learning, the range of opportunities it offers, and the demands these will place on you.
In distance learning systems, teachers and learners are separated by place or time, sometimes both. Instead of studying under the close supervision of a teacher, you study independently, often at home or in your workplace, using a range of learning resources. The University will provide some of these resources, some you will obtain or organise for yourself.
Distance learning has become a popular study choice in recent years and specialist distance teaching institutions have opened in many countries, as new information and communication technologies have made the process of distance teaching easier to organise. But this style of study is not new. The International Programmes of the University of London are one of the earliest examples of university degrees made accessible to students who are not able to register for a conventional course of study. These include people in full time employment, with family commitments, or with a job that requires travel or irregular working hours. Many business people have obtained professional qualifications while still keeping up a demanding schedule of travel and work. Distance learning is ideal also for families who cannot or do not wish to send their children overseas for higher education.
If you choose to study with the University of London you will join the largest, and one of the oldest Universities in Britain. The Colleges and Institutions of the University have an international reputation for the quality of their research and teaching, and the University of London degrees are recognised by employers and educational institutions worldwide. You will also have joined an institution that has been offering distance learning opportunities at degree level for over 150 years as The University established its External Programme in 1858 so that students from around the world who could not attend a full-time course at the University could still study on one of its programmes and graduate with a Degree.

Popular Online College Degrees

By Arun Lakhera
Arizona State University diploma sampleEveryone wants to become a graduate. Parents send their children to schools in the hope that one day their children will earn college degrees such as Bachelors of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.), Bachelors of Computer Science (B.CompSc.) and Bachelor’s of Business Administration (B.B.A.). Students have to confront with many problems while pursuing their graduation. Long distance between home and university is the major hurdle for physically challenged students. The rising cost of higher education prohibits poor students from becoming a graduate. There may be constraint of time for working students.
The universities have found a unique way to award college degrees to students. They are working through internet. Students can submit enrollment forms, attend class, take part in forums and even appear for examination through internet for earning an online college degree. Information technology has brought online college degrees to your door step. Now you are just a click away from your online university degree. There are a number of universities available on internet.

Advantages of online college degrees

There are three main advantages:
Period of time: In a traditional university, students have to attend a college for four years to complete their graduation. On the other hand in an online university, students can pursue graduation at their own pace. You can complete your graduation in less than two years period if you are a determined student. It will save you time as well as money. Students doing graduation in two years can get employed earlier than the students learning in a traditional college.
Number of college courses: The universities can teach thousands of bachelor courses through internet. They need not to maintain staffroom or a huge staff to take care for visiting professors. Students can pursue their bachelor, master and Ph.D. course from a single university. Traditional universities face internal restrictions such as shortage of professors, classrooms etc. in teaching all the available bachelor courses. The students have to run from one university to another in search of their aspired courses.
Economical fees structure: Use of information technology in teaching has helped universities to reduce their fees. Maintaining library and other mandatory departments on internet is cost effective. You will find most thrifty fees structures for various college courses in online universities.

Reasons to earn online college degrees

Working persons usually have no time for themselves. Studying in a traditional college can be a tough job for them. They can enroll in an internet college course to solve their time problem. It will help them to continue studies without cutting working hours.
Distance can pose a major constraint for physically disabled students. Sometimes they have to discontinue their studies due to long distance. It is easier to earn online college degrees for them. They can pursue graduation by sitting in their drawing room.
Enrollment in an online college degree course also helps those students, who are facing difficulties in arranging funds. It is cost effective. You can borrow student loans and can repay them by working part time. Scholarship sites like www.online-degree-scholarships.com can also help you to garner funds for fees.

Top-50 National Universities

Here are 50 top US universities by U.S. News rating.  The U.S. News rankings system rests on two pillars. It relies on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it’s based on our nonpartisan view of what matters in education.
U.S. News helps by spotlighting schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that have been shown to enhance learning. With the help of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, which focuses on quality initiatives in higher education, U.S. News identified eight types of programs associated with student success, including first-year experiences, learning communities, writing in the disciplines, senior capstone, study abroad, internships or cooperative education, opportunities for undergraduate research, and service learning.
